Commonwealth Games England is responsible for the preparation and participation of the England Team in the Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Delhi from 3-14 October 2010. The England team in Delhi will be one of the largest and most successful teams at one of the biggest sporting events in the world. The team is moving on – it has a fantastic inclusive brand ‘We are England’ uniting athletes with supporters and sponsors; plus a new website & a new board and CGE is currently in talks with various commercial partners about sponsorship of the team. In 2010 CGE is looking to start a ‘We are England’ campaign to get the nation behind the England team in advance of the Games.
The Commonwealth Games in 2010 will be a pivotal event where English stars will podium; and vitally important preparation for 2012. It is also a unique opportunity to expose the finest of England’s athletes, along with their supporters and fans and massive TV following to the unique and fantastic opportunities that India offers.
Working with the England team provides a special opportunity to be part of a golden decade for sport in England, and part of a focussed, committed, passionate, ambitious and proud team; destined for medal glory in Delhi.
Membership of the Games Council consists of representatives of 26 sports in the Commonwealth Games programme from which the host city selects up to 17 sports for each Games. The Officers are elected by Council and hold office for 4 years, their work being supported by four salaried staff.
England has competed in every Games since the first Empire Games in 1930 and has hosted the Games twice - in London in 1934 and Manchester in 2002.
The CGE has been a beneficiary of Sport England funding towards the costs of the preparation of Team England since 1994. This has enabled the CGE to run extensive management, training and educational programmes, ensuring that competitors and officials alike are fully prepared to meet the challenges ahead.
The raising of funds for the Team's participation in the Games themselves is the sole responsibility of the CGE and is raised through sponsorship and fund-raising activities. Donations from Commerce and Industry as well as the general public towards the team's costs are always most gratefully received. Without this ongoing support Team England would not be able to participate in the Games.
The CGE is a member of the Commonwealth Games Federation who have overall responsibility for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games.
