British U23 and U18 Weightlifting Championships 2009

The British U18 and U23 Championships were held on 31st October 2009 at the Kilwinning Weightlifting Club in Scotland.  The BWLA wishes to thank Bill Despard and his able assistant Ryan Coyle for hosting their first British Championships which to to run smoothly with very few problems. Not forgetting the two ladies who provided the refreshment all day.
Peter Kirkbride

New British records were set by Hannah Powell in the jerk and total at 44 kilo class for age groups U18 and U17. Local heros from nearby Kilmarnock; Peter Kirkbride and Graeme Kane set new records in the jerk (185 kgs) and Total (276 kg) respectively. Pictured above is Peter Kirkbride jerking 185 kgs whilst looked on by his Coach Charles Hamilton.

Whilst there was some goaning about the venue and the travelling, may I remind the English Coaches that Charles Hamilton, Ray Cavanagh and Bill Despard all attend competitions in England four or five times a year, and it is only fair that we make the effort to travel to the Scottish Clubs.

Pictured right is Hamza Abiyo of Bethnall Green who is snatching 111kg in his debut British Championships. One for World Class Lifting to watch for. Full results can be found in the "Result section".

COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2010Hamza Abiyo

Further to  announcement in early October of the appointment of Maggie Lynes as the Team Manager. The BWLA are pleased to annouce the appointment of Andrew Callard and Dave Sawyer as Weightlifting Coaches and Ian Peters as the Coach for the Paralifting. The Final Qualification Procedure (attached below) will now be despatch for ratification by the Commonwealth Games Council for England, who are responsible for Team England at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

2010 National Weightlifing League

The BWLA will re-introduce the National League in 2010 and is seeking expressions of interests from its weightlifting clubs throughout the United Kingdom.

Following consultations from the clubs, it would appear that the rules for 2010 will be:

(1) Teams:
For the National League there will be a Senior competition and a Junior (U20) competition, for men and women.
The size of team for men will three members and for women will be two members.
Clubs may submit one or more teams per category.
Team members must be registered club members.

(2) Lifting Competitions:
Based upon expression of interests from the clubs registered by 30th November 2009, the National League may be divided into two regions, for example, the North and South, in order to reduce travelling commitments. If there is a significant number of teams entered, then the number of regions may increase.

(3) Scoring:
There will be four matches held and a final of the best teams.
The allowance per team will be two kilograms per one kilograms bodyweight.

(4) Entry Fee:
Entry Fee will be £  xxx per team.

For expression of interest form which has been circulated to all clubs - see attachment.
