EXECUTIVE BOARD APPOINTS NEW BWLA CHAIRMAN.
Dr David Pendleton has been appointed as the new Chairman of the BWLA. David is a psychologist with a doctorate from Oxford University. He is Executive Chairman
of the Edgecumbe Consulting Group in Bristol where he and his colleagues work to improve the quality of leadership and performance in both private sector (commercial) organisations and in the NHS. In this capacity he has worked recently with O2, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Norwich Union, Deloitte, Arqiva, British Airways, and a variety of organisations in Europe, Asia and the USA.
David is also an Associate Fellow of the Said Business School at Oxford University, where he directs programs in Executive Development, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners. He has published four books for GPs and is currently writing a book on organizational leadership.
Perhaps more importantly, David has been lifting weights for personal strength and fitness for over 30 years. He is married with two grown up daughters and lives in Bristol. This is what he said about his appointment:
‘I delighted to have been appointed as Chairman of the BWLA. I greatly admire anyone who is prepared to work hard to improve themselves in any walk of life, and I know the degree of personal sacrifice to which athletes go to perform at the highest level. I am greatly looking forward to helping BWLA advance the cause of increasing health and fitness through weight lifting, and also working closely with World Class Lifting to develop the nation’s weightlifting and paralympic powerlifting talent.’
LOUIS MARTIN, MBE GIVES INTERVIEW TO THE INTERNATIONAL WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION
Louis Martin M.B.E gave an interview to the International Weightlifting Federation
Like the proverbial Phoenix Louis Martin has re-emerged into the world of Weightlifting once again. The sport which he dominated for almost three decades has honoured him in 2009 by electing him President of the British Weightlifters' Association (BWLA).
Louis Martin is hailed as one of Britain's most successful Weightlifters of all time. It is 50 years to the day since Louis won his first World and European title in Warsaw, Poland in 1959.
Louis said "I feel highly honoured and it will be a privilege to serve the sport that I have loved and enjoyed for so many years. I will be eternally grateful and will do all I can to help restore British Weightlifting to its former glory. British Weightlifting was once the envy of the rest of the world."
The IWF interviewed Louis at his home in Heanor near Derby and asked him a few questions (thanks for the help of Dr. Chris Freebury, Director BWLA).
The full interview can be found on the IWF website: www.iwf.net.
CHANGE OF DATES
Due to technical difficulties, the date of the British Schools and Youth Championships have been changed from 6th to the 13th March. I hope that members will be able to accept a date change at this fantastic venue, rather than BWLA look for another venue at short notice which may not be up to the job of two platforms.

The 2010 BWLA Yearbook will be published this week and circulated to all clubs and officers early next week. The book will contain the Calendar of Events and all entries forms for 2010. A full copy will appear on this website next week under "Getting Started".

BWLA ANTI DOPING RULES 2010
On the 14th December the independent United Kingdom Anti Doping Organisation came into existent. The Anti doping rules have been revised to reflect the necessary changes. At the BWLA Executive Board meeting on 11th January 2010, the Board adopted the revised UK Anti Doping Rules v2.0 14.12.09. These rules are effective immediately. A full copy of the UK Anti Doping Rules v2.0 14.12.09 can be found in the Anti doping section.
WORLD ANTI DOPING AGENCY REVISED PROHIBITED LIST
The Prohibited List is updated regularly and a new list always comes into effect each New Year’s Day. For 2010 there are significant changes for athletes, including a popular decongestant and products regularly prescribed to relieve asthma. Also, a new website to allow users to check whether medication is on the Prohibited List has been launched. Athletes are encouraged to check their medication against the Prohibited List regularly and in particular from 1 January 2010 when the new list comes into effect.
Significant Changes to the Prohibited List 2010
From the 1 January 2010 pseudoephedrine comes onto the Prohibited List. Pseudoephedrine is a decongestant for nasal and sinus congestion and is regularly included in well known over-the-counter cough and cold remedies. Athletes should be vigilant when checking a medication’s ingredients, even for remedies that do not require a prescription.
For athletes who are prescribed Salbutamol and Salmeterol by inhalation to relieve asthma, they will no longer require a Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE) for these substances as is currently the case. Instead athletes are required to complete a Declaration of Use prior to being tested as well as declare the substance on the Sample Collection Form after providing a sample to doping control.
Athletes being prescribed Salbutomol for asthma should also be aware that exceeding the manufacturers’ maximum dosage of 2 inhalations 4 times a day could lead to an Anti-Doping Rule Violation. All prescribed medication should only be taken as directed by a physician.
All other Beta-2 Agonists will still require full lung function tests and a TUE application.
The Global Drug Reference Online
A new website to allow users to check whether medication is on the Prohibited List has been launched.
The Global Drug Reference Online Global (DRO) provides athletes and support personnel with information about the prohibited status of specific substances based on the current World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List. This website replaces the Drug Information Database which has been out of operation since January 2009.
Athletes should check regularly any medication they might be taking against the Prohibited List at http://www.globaldro.com/.
In particular, athletes should check their medication in the New Year when the Prohibited List for 2010 comes into effect.
